Your Black Friday Detox Guide
Hi, Claire here from FH Manning. If you’re anything like me, the minute Halloween pumpkins are off the shelves, the Black Friday emails start flooding in. “Unmissable Deal!” “Ends Midnight!” “Last Chance!” Honestly, it can feel like your inbox is screaming at you to spend money you didn’t even know you were planning to spend.
This year, I thought we’d try something different. Let’s take a step back together, breathe, and embrace the idea of a Black Friday Detox. Think of it as a little reset, a way to dodge the impulse buys and protect our future selves from financial regret. Here’s how.
How Retailers Jedi Mind Trick You (and How to Resist)
Retailers are clever. They’ve spent years perfecting the art of persuasion, and Black Friday is their big performance. Flash countdown timers are designed to stir up urgency. “Only 3 left!” plays into our fear of missing out. Crossed out prices give us the illusion of saving, even if the item was marked up last week. And then there’s the classic “add to basket to see discount” trick. Sneaky, right?
These tactics trigger emotional, not rational, decisions. The antidote? Pause. Just knowing these techniques helps us resist them. Take a breath, close the tab, and ask: do I need this, or am I just reacting?
The 48 Hour No Spend Challenge
This is my favourite tip, and it’s surprisingly freeing. I call it the Silent Wallet Challenge. For 48 hours, challenge yourself to:
- Avoid browsing retail apps or websites
- Unsubscribe from marketing emails (you’ll thank yourself later)
- Mute brand notifications on your phone
- Tuck your debit or credit card somewhere inconvenient, out of reach, out of mind
- Write down anything you’re tempted to buy and revisit the list after 48 hours
Most of the time, you’ll find the “must have” item isn’t so must have after all. It’s a little test of patience and a big win for your bank account.
Swipe Right on the Right Stuff
Impulse control gets easier with a simple checklist. Before making a purchase, ask yourself:
- Will I use this 30 days from now?
- Would I buy it at full price?
- Is it replacing something I already own?
- Does it support my financial goals?
- Is this a genuine want or something an algorithm convinced me I needed?
These questions help filter emotional buys from intentional ones. Remember, your money should work for you, not the other way around.
Before You Add to Basket… Add to Savings
Sometimes we spend out of habit, not necessity. Here are some alternatives that redirect the urge to spend:
- Take a walk, listen to a podcast, or call a friend
- Sell something you haven’t used in ages
- Move the money you almost spent into a “Future Me Fund”
- Create a “Wishlist Parking Lot” and review it in December
These swaps are more satisfying than you might expect. Financial wellbeing isn’t about deprivation, it’s about choice.
The £0 Weekend Challenge
Who says fun has to come with a price tag? Challenge yourself to a weekend of joy without spending a penny. Some ideas to get started:
- Have a DIY movie night with popcorn and your favourite blanket
- Play board games with family or housemates
- Go on a nature walk (Lincolnshire has plenty!)
- Cook a meal using only what’s already in your cupboards
It’s a great way to reconnect with what matters, and you might just realise how much you already have.
When Spending Does Make Sense
Let’s be realistic. Spending money is part of life, and Black Friday can offer real value if you plan ahead. It’s okay to shop if:
- The item is something you’ve been budgeting for
- It’s genuinely discounted (price check online tools can help)
- It fills a real need, not a fleeting want
I always recommend researching prices beforehand. A good deal should make sense on paper and in your long term plans. If you’ve planned for it, enjoy it guilt free.
One Final Thought
This Black Friday, let’s choose mindfulness over mayhem. Skip the stress, protect your savings, and spend on what truly matters. I promise, your future self will be glad you did.
Remember, a Black Friday Detox guide is not about saying no to everything. It’s about pausing long enough to make decisions that feel right, not rushed. When you resist the hype, you gain control, clarity, and confidence in how you manage your money. Whether that means enjoying a planned purchase or finding joy in a zero-spend weekend, you’re investing in peace of mind, and that’s priceless.
